Saturday, September 20, may not exactly be so significant to most Lagosians, but for the Children’s Developmental Centre (CDC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), based in Surulere, that date would forever remain fresh in their memory because, that day marked the beginning of the realisation of a dream, which is the building of a modern Lagos Living and Learning Centre (LL&LC) at Idi-Orogbo Village at Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area (LGA). Group Makes Case for Disabled

A non-governmental organisation, the Children's Develop-ment Centre (CDC) has concluded plans to prevail on government to ensure that 2 per cent of the workforce in every company was left for the disabled.

This is with a view to giving the less fortunate ones a sense of belonging.

Addressing newsmen at the ground breaking ceremony of the newly proposed Lagos Living and Learning Centre (LLLC), an umbrella organisation of CDC, in Idi-Orogbo village, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, Director, CDC, Dr. (Mrs.) Yinka Akindayomi, said the centre was prepared to ensure that the children were trained to be "skilled enough to actually hold down a job" in any sector of the society.

"And we want to make sure that the children are being skilled to actually hold down a job. So we are going to ask government that at least 2 per cent of the working force in any company should be able to employ somebody with a disability, whatever that disability is", she said. She said the centre was also looking at community programme that would enable it integrate the children into the society adding that "once we have integrated them into the society, what more can we do".

Akindayomi said she has learnt so much in working with the disabled advising parents with children not to hide them from the public but rather support and encourage them in discovering their potentials.

September 20th, 2003: Ground Breaking on The Lagos Living and Learning Center takes place

The Lagos Living and Learning Center (LL&LC) "Breaking Grounds" took place on Saturday September 20th, 2003 from 12 noon to 2pm on our 8.3 acres of land at Idi-Orogbo village along the Ibeju Lekki expressway. This land had been acquired through the assistance of a company in Lagos who are keen to see the organisation grow and build on, the already laid solid foundation.



June 21st-29th, 2003: C.D.C Young People Represent Nigeria at the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland

4 young people from the The adolescent unit of the Living and Learning Centre participated in the Special Olympics 2003, in Dublin, Ireland, representing Nigeria's

emerging Special Olympic Programme. 4 medals were won, 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronzes, this shows the abilities and skills of young people with developmental disabilities when given the right opportunities.
